Which Role for the Youth in Pakistan’s Political Parties?
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Pakistan and the Department of Sociology of Quaid-e-Azam jointly organized a two-day international conference on “Youth Wings among Political Parties: A Comparative Analysis of Germany and Pakistan” in Islamabad. The aim of the conference was to discuss and analyze the engagement of youth in political activism and the various approaches in a comparative manner taking into account experiences from other parts of the world.
Some 300 young participants joined the conference and listened to speakers from Pakistan, Germany, Switzerland and Canada. The guest speakers included Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal and Germany’s Ambassador Dr. Cyrill Nunn. The Minister highlighted the power of the youth as the generation of the future and shared his own experience as a political activist when he was young: “We must learn to create unity in diversity and coexist peacefully despite our political disagreements,” he said. Acknowledging the importance of the youth in society, the German Ambassador said: “Our destinies are linked together.”
The conference brought together key stakeholders of Pakistani society. “We are pleased to have provided the young a platform to raise their voices”, said FNF’s Country Representative Dr. Almut Besold.
